Untrammeled

In 1923, John W. Spencer was supervisor of the Bighorn National Forest.  He hiked along the Solitude Trail in the Cloud Peak area and photographed many scenic locations.

In 2013, photographer Dave Stoetzel found these locations in what is now the Cloud Peak Wilderness and photographed them again for this comparison display.

Passed in 1964, the Wilderness Act set aside 9.1 million acres of land to be preserved as wilderness.  Over 100 million acres have been awarded this designation since then.  This exhibit is a collaboration with the United States Forest Service to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act.
